Life Hacks: More cleaning tips

In

There were many cleaning hacks that didn’t make it into last week’s column, so here are a few more.

  • Clean your blender by pouring in a couple cups of water with a few drops of dish soap added.  Then blend it up.
  • Break a glass and fear you might step on a tiny invisible shard?  Use a piece of bread to ensure the safety of your feet.  Wipe it around the floor where the glass was dropped or broken and it will pick up any remnants.
  • Clean your cutting board with a lemon half and salt.
  • Smelly kitchen sink drain?  Cut a lemon or orange in half or into quarters and put down the drain to eliminate unpleasant scents. This is best done in sinks with a garbage disposal.
  • Lemons can also be used to clean steel faucets.
  • Place a ball of foil in your dryer if you are out of dryer sheets. It keeps the static out of your clothes.
  • Use old newspapers to clean windows.  Spray the window with window cleaner and use the newspaper to wipe it off for a streak-free clean.
  • You can also use newspaper to dry wet shoes.  Just stuff them with the newspapers.
  • Baking soda is good for getting odors out of shoes, cabinets, or refrigerators.  Pour a teaspoon of it into your shoes and shake it around so that it covers the bottom and let sit overnight.  Simply dump it out when you need to put your shoes on.  For cabinets and fridges, open the box and set somewhere out of the way so you don’t accidently knock it over.
  • Lipstick can be removed from clothes with hairspray.  Spray it on the area, rub with a damp cloth and wash.
