Dear UMKC family,
I am a Communications Studies alumna, class of ‘05. I had the privilege of having Dr. Koehler for three classes, and she served occasionally as my advisor. I was very saddened to hear of her passing, especially since I never told her how much of an influence she had on my life during the time I knew her. She was a superb teacher and I vividly remember all her classes – while many of my others have faded into the mist of memory. She taught me how to make a documentary, how to communicate effectively, and how to pull it all together. She made me think when I didn’t want to, and she encouraged me to push myself when I thought I had worked to the best of my potential.
To her – and to the two other professors who had a big impact on me – Dr. Tom Poe and the late Professor Pierre Rener – I say thank you for giving a part of yourselves to me, and to every other student you’ve taught. I will remember Dr. Koehler, Dr. Poe and Rener for the rest of my life because each one of them made me a better person.
