Lady Roos suffer defeat

The UMKC women’s soccer team suffered a 3-0 defeat to the Missouri Tigers on Sunday at Durwood Soccer Stadium, on the heels of a 2-1 loss in double overtime to Missouri State on Friday night. The Roos, now 1-5-3, still are trying to find their way under first-year head coach Chris Cissell.

The Roos held the Tigers, now 8-2, scoreless for the first half. But in the 52nd minute, senior midfielder Kelsey Blinow broke the tie, with an assist from sophomore forward Alyssa Diggs. Then Diggs scored in the 86th minute, assisted by freshman forward and midfielder Abi Raymer.

A little over a minute later, after a foul on the Roos, sophomore midfielder Dominique Richardson scored on a penalty kick to wrap up the Tigers’ win.

When the Roos faced the Bears in Springfield, UMKC struck first, with Taylor Bare scoring in the 14th minute . The Roos led 1-0 at halftime, and Bears head coach Rob Brewer noted the high energy with which the Roos started.

“UMKC put us under a lot of pressure early,” Brewer said. “Our team fought from start to finish.”

The Bears took over in the second half and Bethany Smith’s goal forced overtime. Both teams failed to score in the first overtime period, but the Bears winning goal, from midfielder Michelle Mayne-Nicholls, came in the 105th minute. The Bears improved to 3-0 all-time against the Roos.

The Roos next play against Nebraska-Omaha at Durwood Soccer Stadium on Sept. 24 at 7 p.m.
