Lady Roos cement No. 3 seed in league tournament

The women’s basketball team clinched the No.3 seed for the 2012 Summit League Championships this week after defeating IUPUI and IPFW to take its record to 19-10 (10-7 in Summit League play) for the season. The Lady Roos completed a narrow 58-56 victory over IUPUI on Feb. 20 in Indianapolis, Ind. before returning Saturday evening to the Swinney Rec. Center to outshoot IPFW 79-62.

UMKC 79 – 62 IPFW

In Saturday evening’s home contest, senior Dayon Hall-Jones led the Roos’ offensive attack with 25 points, moving her into 10th place in the UMKC career scoring records with 991 points.

Junior Kim Nezianya added 13 points and a career-high 15 rebounds for her sixth doubledouble of the year, while sophomore Eilise O’Connor pitched in with 11 points.

The Roos battled hard in the opening minutes, with both teams matching each other offensively before the Roos stretched to a 28-15 lead midway through the first half, courtesy of a 12-0 run. The Roos maintained their dominance for the rest of the half with a 40-29 lead at halftime.

In the second half, the Mastodons battled hard defensively, but a 14-4 run by the Roos effectively finished the resistance as the home side increased the margin to a game-high 23 with just 3:48 left to play. The Roos had done the necessary damage in the early period of the half and despite a Mastodon fight, held on for a 79-62 win.

At the free-throw line, the Roos shot 25-28, draining an impressive 89.3 percent of their chances.

UMKC 58 – 56 IUPUI

In Monday night’s nerve-racking contest in IUPUI’s Jungle, sophomore Ashli Hill led the Roos with 14 points, while O’Connor continued her impressive form with 13 points.

Senior Jade Tinner was a key player in the first half as her powerful play pushed the Roos to a 21-15 half-high lead in a tense affair which was dominated by both respective defenses. Fittingly, the Jaguars ended the half on a hot streak as their 7-2 run tied the score at 27 apiece heading into halftime.

Coming out of the break, Nezianya started a 12-0 run for the Roos and they went from strength to strength as they built a 51-40 lead.

The Jaguars responded with great effort to cut the lead to two but the Roos held on to the slight lead to take a 58-56 victory at the final buzzer.

As a result of their No.3 seeding, the Roos will take on the No.6 seed in the Summit League Championships on Mar. 4in Sioux Falls, S.D.. The Blue & Gold will be back in action on Monday night against Oakland when they will honor seniors Hall-Jones, Tinner, Brianna Eldridge, LeAndrea Thomas, Mariah Scaife and Kelsey Knoche in the final home contest of the season.
