KC STEM expands UMKC’s role in the community

Last week, Kansas City Science and Technology, Engineering and Math (KC STEM) Alliance made a public announcement, regarding intentions to move to Union Station in January 2012.

“The KC STEM Alliance is truly a one-of-a-kind model, designed as an overarching entity that will leverage the strengths of its STEM programs in K-12 education, build a solid foundation that will lead to post-secondary education and strengthen partnerships with local and regional STEM industry leaders to help advance our students into the workforce,” Chancellor Leo E. Morton said.

KC STEM Alliance is a UMKC organization, which involves more than 12,000 K-12 students in the metropolitan region, with an interest in science, technology, engineering and math.

To introduce its two affiliate programs, Project LEAD the Way and FIRST Roberts, it announced the 2012 FIRST LEGO League competition as its opening event. The two programs electrify the world of science for K-12 students through participatory events, particularly competitions.

President and CEO of Union Station, George Guastello said, “We are onored that KC STEM Alliance selected Union Station for its new home. But more importantly, we are excited about the partnerships that will be created with our growing science center and our focus on our community’s young people and commitment to science education.”

KC STEM Alliance maintains four primary objectives for science, technology, engineering and math programs across the metropolitan area. It administers collaborative programs, such as Project Lead the Way, as well as providing an all-inclusive foundation for students from every demographic. Also, it attempts to improve job education for interested candidates, while advancing general economic development in the region.

Executive Director of KC STEM Alliance Laura Loyacono said, “Our move to Union Station will allow us to reach more students, host numerous community-wide events, strengthen our partnership with the business and civic leaders and deepen our partnership with Science City.”
