Kansas City men’s soccer stifles Western Illinois in first win of season

The Kansas City men’s soccer team picked up its first win of the young season with a  2-0 victory over Western Illinois at Durwood Stadium Saturday.

Head Coach Rick Benben was pleased with his team’s performance and wants the Roos to build upon this win.

“Overall everything was good,” said Benben. “We did a very good job passing today. We controlled big portions of the game. The kids are starting to understand their roles on the team.”

From the first whistle, Kansas City looked to grab control of the tempo and build down the field at its preferred pace. The Roos took advantage of Western Illinois’ lack of pressure and moved the ball in an organized manner. In the 20th minute, Kansas City midfielder Kevin Komodi sidestepped a Western Illinois defender and sent a beamer off the left post and out of play. Although the Roos didn’t convert, they were finding a nice rhythm near the goal.

Kansas City was not done creating chances, scoring a wonderful team goal in the 23rd minute..  Freshman Aiden Cavanaugh and Komadi connected on a give-and-go, and Cavanaugh pulled off a nifty spin move between two defenders before slotting a shot into the bottom left corner. The goal allowed Kansas City to slow down the game and play at their own pace, taking a 1-0 lead into halftime.

In the 75th minute, Western Illinois seemed to find its saving grace after a miscue from the Roos’ defense but squandered the opportunity to grab some momentum from Kansas City. The Roos took little time punishing Western Illinois for its mistake, adding to their lead in the 83rd minute.  Kansas City applied persistent pressure to Western Illinois’ backline and cleared ball floated to Roos defender Giacomo Caruso. Caruso took the shot off the volley and hit a wonderful goal over the Leathernecks’ goalkeeper. Kansas City had a firm grip on the game and continued their defensive dominance for the final seven minutes.

The Roos will look to build off this impressive victory when they host SIUE on Sept. 24 at Durwood Stadium.
