Friend or Fee? A Breakdown of Tuition and Additional Costs

The UMKC student fees included in tuition costs translate into several different areas both for the benefit of the school and the student. The current cost per credit hour to attend UMKC sits at $368.72 including additional student fees. The educational cost is $270 before additional fees are added, some on a flat rate and others on a per-credit hour basis.

While this may seem steep, it is less than UMSL across the state, which costs $315.80 per credit hour before additional fees. UMSL boasts a higher cost even than the Columbia campus, at which tuition costs $274 per credit hour before additional fees. These are the current costs for the spring semester of 2015 according to their university websites.

Though the education costs vary slightly, each has its set of additional charges added to tuition, which mostly provide for facilities on campus. The UMKC costs break down into a few simple categories. The listed fees are for an undergraduate Missouri resident for the Spring Semester. Undergraduate students compose the majority of enrollment, with 65 percent as of September.

While many of these are flat rates, most of them cap at 12 credit hours with the exception of information technology. This fee provides students with the compatible computer technologies and their access on campus.

These costs open a lot of resources to students. The Swinney Recreation Center cost allows students free access to the facility. The rate is also pledged to retire the $5,500,000 revenue bond issued to help construction costs of Swinney Recreation Center’s renovation.

Similarly, fees for the Student Health Center and Student Union provide services for students on campus. Another fee which is unique to UMKC is the transportation fee, which at a flat rate provides all-access transit for UMKC Students in the Kansas City Area Transportation Authority’s Metro and Max bus services.

The Student Program fee funds the student organizations and clubs as well as a number of activities and events around campus. The Vice Chancellor’s Advisory Committee makes recommendations regarding the allocation of these funds. Additionally, the A.S.U.M. fee funds UMKC’s representation in the Associated Students of the University of Missouri, which provides advocacy for student concerns at the state and national levels.

These costs are designed to further the community of the university and the success of the students. All of these costs can be found on the UMKC Cashier’s website, as can costs for out of state residents and graduate students. A breakdown of charges can be acquired at the Cashier’s Office in the Administrative Building at 5115 Oak St. with photo identification and student number.

The website also has a Tuition and Fee Estimator designed to give an idea of the costs of attending UMKC. The estimator lists the same cost for tuition in the fall semester of this year at $368.72.
