Five cheap eats around campus

With the fall semester kicked into gear, our chaotic schedules often leave us running on empty. Sometimes we’re lucky to even grab that granola bar on our way out the door. Even with limited time and money, there are still tasty, affordable meal options out there. Yes, I used “tasty” and “affordable” in the same sentence.

Even with limited time and money, there are still tasty, affordable meal options out there. Yes, I used “tasty” and “affordable” in the same sentence.

Here are five restaurants around campus that cater to different palates, dietary needs and budgets.

1. Kin Lin

One of my personal favorites, Kin Lin is just a short walk from campus at 51st Street and Brookside Boulevard. It offers an entire lunch menu with options well under $10.

To save even more money, take advantage of their rewards program: order 10 entrees, and the 11th is free.

The restaurant offers a variety of protein options like tofu, chicken, beef and shrimp, and a vegetarian menu is readily available.

2. Pizza 51

Located at 51st and Oak, Pizza 51 is a cult classic among UMKC students.

You can order a cheese slice or any other specialty slices for under $10. Twenty-six-inch pies that feed up to eight people are a great way to dine with friends while being cost-friendly.

Not to mention, you’ll never get bored with their endless list of toppings. If you’re looking for a healthier option (or just aren’t in the mood for pizza), try one of their salads or wraps.

3. Pickleman’s

This restaurant is in close vicinity to the Oak Place Apartments on campus.

With 18 specialty sandwiches and a “pick 2” option for soups and salads, it boasts hundreds of healthy combinations. They also have a few options for pizza if you love it as much as I do.

Like Kin Lin, they have a rewards program, along with an app for tracking and ordering. A complimentary birthday sandwich is an added bonus, so remember to stop by on your special day.

4. Go Chicken Go

On the east side of campus near Spencer Hall, Go Chicken Go serves up fresh chicken until 12:30 a.m.

With other options on the menu, this is primarily for the meat-eaters out there. Meals, gizzards, livers and sandwiches are the staples, but if you aren’t feeling too adventurous, there are chicken legs and breasts to try.

While you’re at it, definitely snag a piece of apple, pecan or sweet potato pie—or all three. This place is very affordable and has been a long-standing favorite in Kansas City since its doors opened in 1969.

5. Sahara Mediterranean Food

Sandwiched between Kin Lin and Pizza 51, Sahara offers fresh Mediterranean food at the best prices.

Their budget-conscious lunch specials run 10 a.m.-3 p.m. The specials include the restaurant’s featured sandwiches that come with fries, soup or salad. Various chicken and kabob entrees come with soup or salad, and vegetarian options are also available. If you love Mediterranean food, you can’t go wrong with their hummus plate.
