Kansas City’s professional women’s soccer team, FC Kansas City, defeated the Portland Thorns Saturday and earned a ticket to the National Women’s Soccer League final.
The Thorns arrived in Kansas City as the defending NWSL champions, but after 90 minutes of play in 97 degrees F heat, FCKC pulled out a hard-fought victory.
At the half, both teams left the field tied 0-0. It wasn’t until the 63rd minute when lead scorer Amy Rodriguez scored for the 14th time this season.
Portland fought hard to tie the score, but Kansas City did a great job in the back line by not allowing Olympic gold medalist Alex Morgan and her teammates near the goal.
In the 87th minute, Sarah Hagen passed toLauren Holiday, who scored the second goal of the afternoon with a right-footed strike, her ninth of the season.
FC Kansas City finished 2nd in the regular season with 41 points and a record of 12-7-5.
Head coach Vlatko Andonovski and his team will try to win the 2014 NWSL Championship on Sunday, Aug. 31.
