Detox – your body will thank you

Halloween fell on a Friday this year, which means the entire weekend was at the disposal of partygoers everywhere. Snacks and drinks of all types of sugar and alcoholic content were consumed in mass quantities. Now, it is time to repay your body for putting up with the shenanigans. A simple detox remedy does wonders. Take your pick:

 

Drinks

Strawberry Pineapple and Basil Tonic

Pineapple is rich in natural digestive enzymes, strawberries are loaded with vitamins and folic acid and basil contains antibacterial agents that help protect the liver.

Ingredients: Serve in a glass, no blending necessary

  • 16 oz. cold water
  • 1/2 cup ice
  • 5 strawberries
  • 1/2 cup pineapple
  • 1-2 tsp. apple cider vinegar
  • 4-5 medium basil leafs

Asparagus Fruit Juice

This drink is bursting with antioxidants and electrolytes that relieve bloating and restore hydration cells.

Ingredients: Serve blended together over ice

  • 2 oranges
  • 2 green apples
  • 8-10 stalks of asparagus
  • 1 cup of cilantro
  •  2 tbsp. lemon juice
  • 1/2 tsp. ginger

Cran-kale Smoothie

Both kale and cranberries are super foods that are packed with vitamins and minerals that do good for your entire system.

Ingredients: Blend together

  • 1/2 cup fresh cranberries
  • 1/4 cup fresh blueberries
  • 1/2 cup baby kale
  • 1/2 cup coconut milk
  • Ice, desired amount

Spiced Cranberry Water

This warm pick-me-up is an incredible dose of antioxidants that improves liver function.

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup fresh cranberries
  • 1 tsp. turmeric
  • 1/2 tsp. cumin
  • 1/2 tsp. fennel
  • 1 cup water

Directions:

  1. Heat water to boiling and pour into cup with spices.
  2. Stir and let sit for one minute.
  3. Crush cranberries so that each one has opened up.
  4. Add cranberries to spiced water. Let steep an additional minute.

Green Smooth-tea

The antioxidants in the green tea, the nutrients in the kale and the sweetness and fiber from the apple will have you amped up in no time.

Ingredients: Blend well

  • 1 cup green tea, brewed and chilled
  • 1/2 cup baby kale
  • 1/2 apple, preferred
  • 1 tbsp. Greek yogurt
  • Ice, desired amount

The C-3PO

This drink is a quintessence of antioxidants, fiber and Vitamin C that provides long-lasting energy and immune health.

Blend these ingredients together:

  • 1 cup green tea, brewed and chilled
  • 1/2 pear, sliced
  • 1/2 cup pineapple, cubed
  • 1/2 cup papaya, cubed

Foods

Hemp Salad

This bowl is chockfull of fiber, Vitamin E and omega-3s.

Ingredients:

  • 3 cups cabbage (mix of purple and green), finely shredded
  • 1/4 cup red and yellow peppers, diced
  • 1 1/2 avocados, diced with pit removed
  • 3 tbsp. hemp oil
  • 1 1/2 tbsp. lime juice
  • 1/4 cup hemp seeds
  • 3 tbsp. cilantro, chopped

Directions:

  1. Combine ingredients in a large bowl.
  2. Mix to tenderize the cabbage and cream the avocado. Serve.

Winter Detox Soup

This warm, hearty soup is packed with vitamins, fiber and spices that both comfort and cleanse in under 100 calories.

  • 1 large onion, peeled and sliced
  • 1 clove garlic, peeled and crushed
  • 1 turnip, peeled and chopped
  • 1 medium sweet potato, peeled and chopped
  • 2 cups vegetable stock
  • 2 large zucchini, trimmed and thinly sliced
  • 3 cups curly kale, rinsed and drained
  • 1 cup baby spinach

Directions:

  1. Sauté onion and garlic in a sauce pan with a splash of stock for 4 minutes. Add turnip and sweet potato, and sauté for an additional 3 minutes.
  2. Add the rest of the stock and simmer for 10 minutes.
  3. Stir in the zucchini and kale, and simmer for 5 minutes.
  4. Add spinach and simmer for another minute.
  5. Pour soup mixture into blender or food processor, and blend until smooth.
  6. Return to saucepan over low heat. Serve.

The Day After Salad

This raw salad is perfect for cleansing your system after that large pizza or six tacos you may or may not remember eating.

Ingredients:

  • 2 carrots, peeled and chopped
  • 1 head of broccoli, cleaned and chopped
  • 1/2 pint grape tomatoes, sliced
  • 2 tbsp. sunflower seeds
  • 1/4 cup cilantro, minced
  • 1 1/2 tbsp. grapeseed oil
  • 1/2 tbsp. apple cider vinegar
  • 1/2 lemon, juiced
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Directions:

  1. Combine carrots and broccoli in food processor and pulse until finely chopped.
  2. Empty into a medium sized bowl.
  3. Add tomatoes, sunflower seeds and cilantro to bowl.
  4. Separately whisk dressing (oil, vinegar, lemon and salt and pepper) together and pour over salad mixture.
  5. Toss to combine. Chill for 30 minutes before serving.
