Blue, gold and rainbow: UMKC Pride Month events in April

LGBT+ student organizations and LGBTQIA Programs and Services are teaming up to provide a month of educational, social and advocacy-based events for the annual Pride Month at UMKC. While October is traditionally LGBT history month and June is traditionally Gay Pride Month, UMKC holds Pride Month in April so the school’s LGBT+ can celebrate during the academic year.

April 9

Pride Month speaker Kylar Broadus
Kylar Broadus is the senior public policy counsel and director of the National LGBTQ Task Force’s Transgender Civil Rights Project. Broadus was the first openly transgender person to testify before the U.S. Senate, in support of the Employment Non-Discrimination Act. Broadus will be discussing diversity, equity and inclusion at his UMKC appearance.

Free STI testing

April 11
Inclusion Spring Bash
Multiple student organizations will gather to celebrate UMKC’s devotion to being a diverse and inclusive campus, using the hashtag #AllMeansAll on social media.
University Walkway at 5-9 p.m.

April 12
International Day of Silence
Take part in the national vow of silence that sheds light on nonviolent protests of LGBT+ erasure, sponsored by GLSEN.

Multicultural Chats – Being Latinx and LGBTQ

Come hear three guests speak about their experiences being LGBT+ and living in a Latin American household.

Safe Space Training (Registration required)
Learn how to be a supportive ally to the LGBT+ community.

April 18
Food. Arts. Qulture Film + Ball Culture
Come celebrate queer arts and culture with a free screening of “Kiki,” followed by a Miniball performance by the Kansas City organization, Food.Arts.Qulture.

April 24
Masquerade
This LGBTQIA+ Affairs Council’s annual event gives the LGBT+ community a space to celebrate the end of the year, specifically those who may not have been able to attend their high school dances. This year’s theme is vintage Hollywood.
