How has college inspired you?

It has helped me mature into the adult I am today.

Since entering college, what have you learned about yourself?

That my quirky attitude is an essential part of my being, and that it’s OK to be flamboyant in my design, physically and intellectually.

“Don’t let your strength become your weakness. I am the oldest of eight and a first-generation college student. You have to be strong but you have to know when to ask for help.”

Why did you choose UMKC?

It was far enough away from home (St. Louis) that I could be my own person but close enough if I need my mommy, I can go back. I liked the campus atmosphere. You can blend in but also get one-on-one help.

What excites you?

New experiences. I’ve always been adventurous and curious. I like culture, food and meeting new people.

What motto do you live by?

Don’t let your strength become your weakness. I am the oldest of eight and a first-generation college student. You have to be strong but you have to know when to ask for help.

What does being a first-generation college student mean to you?

It means that it is on my shoulders to open the doors of higher education for my siblings, which is a wonderful load to bear.

Where is UMKC taking you?

I want to get my master’s in explosives or detonation engineering and be a demolitionist. I’d like to work in big cities with large buildings – I’m not a country girl—and make sure the buildings come down at the right angle.

What are your lifelong goals?

Have a family, be set in my career, travel and see more than the cubicle I have been in.
