Wellness Activities Update


The T. E. Atkins Wellness Program’s goal is to empower employes to make positive lifestyle choices, achieve optimal wellness and reach their full potential. Below are some opportunities to aid with your wellness.

Bingo Walks

Healthy for Life’s Bingo Walk will take place between 11:30 a.m. – 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 18. The Volker campus faculty and staff will walk around Kaufman Legacy Park pond and those at Hospital Hill campus will meet at the walking track near Children’s Mercy Hospital.  All participants who walk for at least 20 minutes will be entered into a drawing, participants can win a prize for completing a horizontal or vertical Bingo and a prize will be awarded to the person who walks the most laps (2 at each campus). Remember to bring comfortable shoes & layered clothing. The Bingo event is worth 10 Tier-2 incentive points.

Volker Campus Walking Group

Take a brisk walk with your UMKC colleagues once or twice a week. Join Wellness Ambassador Deborah Phillips on Wednesdays and Fridays, starting at 12:15 p.m. for approximately 30 minutes. Wear your pedometer if you have one. There will be options for inclement weather. Contact Phillips at 235-2660 or Deborah Phillips for more information, the current starting location or to be added to the interest distribution list.

UMKC Yoga Classes

Relax your tight muscles and calm your mind with UMKC Yoga classes. Register for 12:10 – 12:50 p.m. classes at the Volker campus by contacting Michael at or by calling 913-766-9566.  Classes on the Volker campus are Mondays and Wednesdays, Room 201/202, 4747 Troost Ave.; Tuesdays, Administrative Center, Gillham Park Room; and Thursdays, School of Law, Gallery of the Thompson courtroom (bottom floor).

You can register for Hospital Hill campus classes by contacting Amanda Garner at or by calling 816-922-9900. Classes on the Hospital Hill campus are Thursdays, Room 250, School of Dentistry, 12:15 – 12:45 p.m., participants may stay until 12:50 p.m.

No experience is needed, all abilities welcome and the first class is FREE. Classes are $4 each if you register for the month (one or more days) or try a class anytime; the cost for drop-ins are $6 per session. Comfortable street clothes are encouraged. Bring a yoga mat or a thick blanket. Each class is worth 10 points toward Tier 2 of the Wellness Incentive (max. of 100).

2016 Wellness Incentive

You can earn up to $450* from Nov. 2015 through Sept. 2016 for taking steps to improve your health and define what wellness means to you. The 2016 Wellness Incentive has two tiers:

Tier 1: Educate yourself – Complete Tier 1 by April 30 to earn $100 in May.

Tier 2: Invest in yourself – Complete Tier 2 by Sept. 30 to earn an additional $350 in Oct. 2016.

Educate yourself to discover ways you could improve your health. Then, invest in yourself by participating in Tier 2 activities that help you reach your goals. Check out the Wellness Incentive website for more information.
