Provost Jenny Lundgren announced Kati Toivanen will serve as interim dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, effective July 1. She will serve a one-year appointment through June 2021, with the anticipation a search for a dean will commence in the coming calendar year.
Kati joined the UMKC faculty in 1998 as a professor of studio art but quickly took on leadership roles within the College of Arts and Sciences, from chair of the Art and Art History Department to associate dean for undergraduate affairs from 2011 to 2018. In addition, she has been a leader in online education at UMKC and is a faculty representative on the UM Online eLearning Academic Council.
“Kati is a decisive leader who can collaboratively work through difficult challenges and transitions,” Lundgren said. “Her experiences as a faculty member, a department chair and an associate dean working closely with undergraduate student affairs give her a broad perspective that will benefit the College and campus. I am confident that she will move the College forward during this time. I look forward to working closely with her to achieve our university’s vision for excellence.”
