Provost Jenny Lundgren announced Friday that interim dean of students Chris Brown, Ph.D. will be returning to her role as chair of Counseling and Education Psychology at the School of Education. Brown has served in the position as dean of students for the past year. Her stint ended with the end of the summer.
“Chris has been a tremendous, caring leader and has been instrumental in helping us develop and live the Culture of Care that is an essential part of the UMKC experience and our commitment to students. Our university – and our students – are better for her engagement in this important role,” said Lundgren.
The university planned to complete a search for a permanent dean of students by now, but the pandemic put the search on hold.
Keichanda Dees-Burnett, assistant dean of students for student support and director of Multicultural Student Affairs and Todd Wells, assistant dean of students for student engagement and director of the Office of Student Involvement, will serve jointly as the new interim deans of students, effective immediately.
“We are lucky to have two experienced and talented leaders within the Student Affairs division who will pick up Chris’s mantle,” Lundgren said. “Between them, Burnett and Wells work closely with virtually every student-facing enterprise on our campus and have been a vital part of growing and improving the student experience at UMKC. They will continue that work – and then some – as UMKC plans for the return of students this fall and ensures that they have the supports and resources they need to succeed.”
