Lucerna Readies for Next Publication

0

By day, the editors of Lucerna, the UMKC undergraduate research journal, are taking online classes and working in summer jobs.

By night and weekend, they are producing the next volume of the only interdisciplinary journal open to all undergraduates at UMKC.

Editor-in-Chief Richard Schneider, a computer science major who will be a senior, is working remotely from his home in Clarkston, Michigan, as a software developer for State Farm. He is collaborating with Managing Editor Lee Francis, a biology major who will be a sophomore and is working at a plant nursery in St. Louis, to help 10 contributors polish the essays that will appear in the next volume of Lucerna, to be published in March 2021.

“We had great submissions and had a tough time choosing what to publish,” Schneider said. “The essays range from the history of mathematics to racial disparity in Kansas City to environmental studies. Lucerna presents important, diverse topics that impact and interest students and the community.”

From August to May, the Lucerna staff solicits research papers from undergraduates in all UMKC classes. Volunteer reviewers conduct anonymous evaluations of submissions, and Lucerna editors choose the highest rated essays for publication. The editors and staff then collaborate with Professor Paul Tosh’s Egghead Student Design Agency to produce the journal.

Lucerna is released at the annual Symposium in March, and contributors are invited to present their research to public audiences. Since the Honors College founded Lucerna in 2006, it has published the work of 140 undergraduates from all UMKC units and can be accessed internationally.

“Publishing Lucerna is a big job that involves many students,” said Henrietta Rix Wood, faculty advisor of the journal and professor in the UMKC Honors College. “Every year, I am impressed by the caliber of submissions and the commitment of the staff to share the findings of their peers.”

The Lucerna staff for 2020-2021 includes Marketing Design Coordinators Anabeth Laaker and Christian Dang; Public Relations Co-Supervisors Ella Valleroy and Sagi Rudnick; Co-Secretaries Emily Schmitt and Tinh Nim; and Treasurer Sean Purdue.
