The College of Arts and Sciences is starting an exciting and important First Gen Roo program in fall 2019 for incoming first generation students. In celebrating and acknowledging what it means to be a first generation student, UMKC faculty and staff who were first generation students themselves are invited to join the First Gen Proud community at UMKC.
You can help make the first generation student identity one that is more visible and vocal on the UMKC campus. Here are some ideas how:
- Add FIRST GEN PROUD to your email signature
- Contact the First Gen Roo team by email at firstname.lastname@example.org or on the FIRST GEN PROUD website to share your first generation story; give your advice for incoming first generation students; and let the team know that you would like to be involved and stay informed about First Gen Roo
“Being a first generation college student is something I take a lot of pride in,” said Samantha Hays, First Gen Roo peer mentor 2019. “I came to college with a passion for learning new things and a commitment to see this through.”
Up to 45 incoming freshmen from the UMKC College of Arts and Sciences will be selected for the first cohort of the First Gen Roo program, joining nine current students who have already been selected as peer mentors. The first generation students selected for the program will receive direct and regular attention to their goals and needs as well as contribute to cultivate and celebrate the supportive, energetic and inclusive first generation community at UMKC.
In addition to their peer mentor, students will receive an early introduction to resources, community building, and academic experiences at UMKC the week before the fall semester begins as well as $100 book stipend for their first semester. The program will provide a wide range of interactive and specially-designed programming and provide support and guidance through the UMKC journey through the lasting relationships built with their peer mentor, fellow First Gen Roo participants and the wider First Gen Proud network.
The priority deadline for incoming students to apply for First Gen Roo is Monday, July 1. The First Gen Roo program is funded through an Inclusive Excellence award through UM System.
