Teachers and Students for Community-Oriented Research and Education: Linking Industry, Faculty, and Teachers (TSCORE-LIFT)

Focus Areas: Teachers Work, Career Pathways, STEM Education

Year: 2021-Present

The purpose of this project is to create and evaluate a series of CTE interventions for the Kansas Health Sciences Career Pathway.

TSCORE LIFT is a NIH-funded program that links industry, faculty, and teachers to create a continuum of hands-on, NGSS-aligned educational units for the health science pathway. The 5-year program has three overarching goals:

  1. Stimulate the interest and boost the preparation of racially, ethnically, and geographically diverse high school students for careers in the dynamic and changing health care sector.
  2. Create localized science education resources that provide teachers and school districts with professional development opportunities and content that can be used from year-to-year and disseminated.
  3. Create community partnerships across the state of Kansas to boost science education and empower community entities (local health systems, universities, and school districts) to tackle local community health problems and workforce needs.
Dr. Karin Chang serves as the co-PI of the grant. As of 2024, five school districts (Wichita Public Schools, Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools, Lawrence Public Schools, Hays Public Schools, and Topeka Public Schools) have participated in the program and implemented the TSCORE LIFT interventions in their classrooms.
Preliminary results have been published in the CTE Journal (link); Journal of STEM Outreach (link).
The collaborative project is funded by the National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS) Science Education Partnership Awards (SEPA) and includes faculty from KUMC, the University of Kansas, and the University of Missouri-Kansas City, as well as teachers and students from USD 500 (Kansas City), USD 259 (Wichita), and USD 501 (Topeka).
