Evaluation of the KUMC/KCKCC K-12 Initiative

Focus Areas: STEM Education, K-12 Education

Year: 2023-Present

This evaluation examines the impact of an extra-curricular enrichment program engaging middle and high school students in hands-on STEM learning experiences and exploration of STEM careers.

The K-12 Initiative is a collaboration between the University of Kansas Medical Center (KUMC), Kansas City Kansas Community College (KCKCC), and Kansas City Kansas Public Schools (KCKPS) in Wyandotte County, Kansas. Its flagship program, Saturday Science and Math Immersion (“Saturday Academy”), brings middle and high school students together on Saturdays throughout the school year for hands-on STEM learning. The program aims to increase awareness of STEM and health careers and prepare students for postsecondary STEM education.

The K-12 Initiative is partnering with UERC to evaluate the program and plan for a long-term study of its benefits. The evaluation focuses on understanding how the program impacts students as well as creating systems to track alumni outcomes.
