Evaluation of Literacy for All Students and the Royals Literacy League

Focus Areas: K-12 Education

Year: 2024-Present

This evaluation examines the implementation and impact of literacy initiatives across elementary schools in Kansas City.

The Literacy for All Students (LFAS) and Royals Literacy League (RLL) programs operate in schools across the Kansas City Public Education System (KCPES). LFAS provides high-intensity tutoring for students in grades K-3 as well as supports for teachers, literacy coaches, and building principals as they work to implement evidence-based literacy practices. Through RLL, these schools have a Crown Library with books for kids and families, a Classroom Champion (designated Royals player who visits and connects with kids to encourage reading), and Book Club at the Ballpark in the spring that brings students and their families together for a celebration and reading event at Kauffman Stadium.

Through a partnership with SchoolSmartKC, The Sherman Family Foundation, and The Kansas City Royals Foundation, UERC serves as the evaluation partner for the LFAS and RLL programs. This comprehensive evaluation involves identifying implementation successes and challenges, assessing changes in student attitudes and reading enjoyment, examining growth and proficiency in student reading skills and performance, and exploring the impact of these resources with teachers, administrators, and parents.
