Who can report an incident?
All members of the university community as well as visitors and third parties can report incidents using the online form.
What happens when I file a report?
Reports submitted online are sent directly to the Title IX coordinator.
Once the report is submitted, and depending on the detail of the information provided, the institution will take reasonable steps to investigate the matter, stop the harassment, prevent its recurrence and remedy its effects.
Reports made to the Title IX office are treated like any other allegation of discrimination. In conjunction with other campus resources, the Title IX office strives to provide all injured parties with the support they need, including medical care, counseling and advocacy. The university takes steps to ensure that students are safe and not subject to further harassment or retaliation.
Will my information be kept private?
Privacy of the parties is a top priority to the University. However, sometimes, limited information must be disclosed to fully investigate a report. The University will weigh the impacted party’s request for confidentiality in determining whether or how to proceed with an investigation. In some instances, to protect the safety of the campus community, an investigation may still go forward even if the impacted party refuses to participate with the investigation.
If the reported Title IX Policy violation constitutes a reportable offense under the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act, the Title IX Coordinator is required to report basic non-identifying information to the UMKC Police Department. Further, the University may have to provide a timely warning in a manner likely to reach all members of the campus community in order to safeguard students and campus employees.
If I report, will I be singled out or experience negative consequences?
The university strictly prohibits retaliation against any person for making a report required by this policy, for making any good faith report to a Title IX coordinator or for filing, testifying, assisting, or participating in any investigation or proceeding involving allegations of sex discrimination, sexual harassment or sexual misconduct. Any person who engages in such retaliation shall be subject to disciplinary action in accordance with applicable procedures. Examples of prohibited retaliation include, but are not limited to, giving a lesser grade than the student’s academic work warrants because the student filed a complaint of sexual harassment; giving lower than justified performance appraisals because a person was a witness in an investigation of alleged sexual harassment; and threatening to spread false information about a person for filing a complaint of sexual harassment. Will I be punished if alcohol or drugs were involved?
In order to foster reporting and participation, the university may provide amnesty to complainants and witnesses for minor student conduct violations ancillary to the incident. (CR&R 600.020(E))
