Energy Management History

In 2007, Burns & McDonnell Engineering entered into a performance contract with UMKC to design and build energy-saving features for existing and future buildings. This contract pays for itself with the savings from such measures as efficient lighting, improved exhaust air and lab controls, water-conserving plumbing, and night set-backs for heating and cooling. The partnership yielded impressive results:

  • Continue to monitor energy use
  • Investigate newer, cleaner technologies
  • Continue to retrofit buildings with energy-saving upgrades
  • Explore more options with KCP&L
  • Develop reduced rate structures and peak demand load shedding
  • Take advantage of KCP&L’s current rate case and Iatan II project
  • Total annual savings: $1,6000,000

June 2007

  • Revenue Bond Finance an Energy Performance Contract with Burns & McDonnell Engineering
  • Financed the total cost of $19,675,027 from energy savings within a 15-year period

March 2006

  • Entered natural gas energy marketing agreement with Oneok Energy Marketing
  • Purchased interruptibility natural gas at a significant savings to the campus
