An Evening with Edmund White – November 12, 2015

UMKC’s Creative Writing Program will be hosting “An Evening with Edmund White” with Literacy Kansas City on November 12, 2015.  The internationally known writer and Princeton professor Edmund White, author of more than 25 books, will be the featured speaker, along with his husband Michael Carroll, who has just published an award-winning short story collection. You can also find information at www.LiteracyKC.org. Please see flyer for more details: WFRFlier2015_final_9-21.

Literacy Kansas City teaches thousands of adults in the Kansas City area to read every year. They’d like to expand their programming by offering their students a chance to learn creative writing techniques. The idea is that students are more likely to become engaged in the difficult project of learning to read and write if they are given the tools to tell their own stories.

The funds raised at this event will allow Literacy Kansas City to hire two talented graduate students from UMKC’s Creative Writing Program. They’ll do the teaching.

Community activism and involvement, literacy, the creative arts in Kansas City, support for UMKC— these causes are at the core of our mission. The table sponsorships for this event are sold out. But individuals can purchase a ticket and support this very important program. Edmund White is one of the most important, living American writers, one of the gems of Princeton’s Creative Writing program, and he’s also a delight. Edmund doesn’t travel much these days, so this will be a very, very rare opportunity to see him on stage and in person.

This is a big new venture for UMKC’s Creative Writing Program and for Literacy Kansas City. We’d be honored to have you involved. I hope you’ll put the date on your calendar and join us.

Thanks,
