Student Undergraduate Research Opportunity (SUROP)

Applications for the Summer Undergraduate Research Opportunity (SUROP) are now available through UMKC’s Office of Undergraduate Research. SUROP provides UMKC undergraduates students with the opportunity to engage in research, scholarly projects, and creative work while being mentored by a faculty member during the summer session, 2015.

Selected students receive a $2,000 tuition grant and up to $1,250 to cover their research expenses. Undergraduate students in all disciplines across the College are encouraged to apply. The deadline for applications is March 13, 2015, and full details and the application are available at http://www.umkc.edu/searchsite/.

During summer 2014, SUROP-funded students visited the archives of the Federal Reserve Bank in New York City, used FitBits to measure sleep quantity and quality among college students, traveled to Africa to research the history of the slave trade along the Gold Coast, and interviewed public health professionals serving the Latino/Latina community in Kansas City. These and other SUROP awardees have shared their work at the annual SUROP Symposium (September 2014), with state legislators in Jefferson City, and at regional and national conferences.

Students wanting help in preparing a successful SUROP application can attend a workshop with consultants from the Writing Studio on Friday, February 27, from 12:30 to 2:00 in room 203, ASSC.
