ICSI AI Guidelines

International Center for Supplemental Instruction (ICSI) Vision on Ethical AI Usage

The International Center for Supplemental Instruction understands and embraces the idea that Artificial Intelligence (AI) Tools have become integrated into key aspects of daily operations within Higher Education. The ICSI also acknowledges the ethical challenges that arise due to the use of AI Tools. These challenges can include the replacement of human work, bias in AI-generated data whether input or output, inaccuracy of generated search outcomes, potential for academic dishonesty (e.g., plagiarism, citation, etc), ethical considerations (e.g., disclosure of intellectual property whether intentional or inadvertent), among other concerns. Our vision within the ICSI is to create resources and tools available to SI Practitioners that embrace ethical use of AI Tools to be harnessed by human imagination as opposed to being a replacement of human innovation, creativity, and critical thought.

Guidelines on AI Use in a Supplemental Instruction (SI) Program

Policy and Ethical Oversight

  • Ensure that all SI-related AI use complies with institutional policies on AI, privacy, and data protection.
  • Require SI Leaders (SILs) to disclose any AI use in planning, materials, or session facilitation, citing the specific applications and outputs used.
  • Verify that SILs accurately report their working hours, particularly when AI reduces the time needed for session planning.

Training and Professional Development

  • Design and deliver training for SILs and mentors on the responsible use of AI, emphasizing its role as a supplemental tool rather than a replacement for their knowledge and experience.
  • Offer continuous opportunities for SILs to refine their understanding of ethical AI use through workshops and resources.
  • Demonstrate appropriate AI usage in your interactions with SILs, faculty, and during training to set an example of responsible practice.

Collaboration with Faculty

  • Encourage SI Leaders to work with faculty to understand and integrate their guidelines on AI use into session practices, ensuring alignment with course objectives, accuracy of content, and respect for the faculty’s intellectual property.

One Response

  1. One resource we have recently started implementing would be a Personal AI Policy for our SI Leaders and Tutors. After having them complete training on the topic, we have them create their own policy regarding their usage of AI tools in their personal and professional lives as a way to hold them accountable. Here is a copiable link to that policy: https://docs.google.com/document/d/182LID5uE0sOWbt4CrLTQV6sQWSunCPdXhxJF4aet-7A/copy?usp=sharing

If anyone would like examples of professional development modules we have used with our leaders in the past here at UMKC, feel free to shoot me an email!
