SI Award Nominations: Accepted September 1-November 30, 2019

To recognize the excellence of individuals in the field, the International Center for Supplemental Instruction will present awards at the 2020 Conference on SI. All award winners will receive recognition certificates.

General Eligibility

Any SI Leader, SI supervisor, or other professional colleague at an institution that has an active SI program is eligible for the awards and recognition program, with the exception of the Outstanding SI Program category. Anyone who has previously received an individual SI award or an Outstanding Program award is eligible for the award again, but not for the same accomplishments submitted in the previous award nomination material. Past winners must provide documentation highlighting new accomplishments/changes since previously awarded.

Award Categories

Outstanding SI Program – Open to Accredited (Certified) SI Programs and programs outside the U.S. only

This award recognizes excellence in SI programs. This award seeks to recognize programs that are achieving outstanding impacts on student grades, DFW rates, and student persistence/retention. This award also seeks to recognize programs who are innovating their SI program to remain impactful through institutional change and to meet the needs of their student populations. Winners are model SI programs that lead SI efforts worldwide.

Evaluation Criteria

     

  • Open to Accredited (Certified) SI Programs and programs outside the U.S. only
  • Experiential evidence provided by students, faculty, and campus administrator of the key components of the outstanding program
  • Evidence of successful program outcomes to include: positive results on student learning outcomes (higher GPA/lower DFW), increased graduation rates, and reduced attrition rates
  • Evidence of professional development gained by SI leaders

Nomination Instructions

Below is a list of documents that must be included in the Outstanding SI Program Nomination. Please submit the documents in one PDF document through the online SI Award Nomination form.

     

  • Provide a brief, two-page narrative that summarizes the achievements of the SI program including description of the program as represented by: percentage and number of students served, qualitative and/or quantitative research studies on program effectiveness regarding student outcomes
  • Optional: include a link to a video (no more than 2 minutes) that introduces your program to the selection committee
  • Submit letters of support from nominee’s students, faculty, and campus administrators (at least one from each group, no more than 5 letters total)
  • Submit a detailed pre-term training agenda and all on-going training agendas from the most recent semester
  • Provide a link to a brief video interview (1 minute max) with an SI Leader in which they discuss their experiences with the program, including how the have utilized training knowledge and observation feedback in their development
  • Provide a link to a brief video interview (1 minute max) with a student who utilizes SI services and can speak to the impact of the program on their educational journey

 

Outstanding SI Leader – Open to all

This award supports SI Leaders as they continue or fulfill their higher education goals and recognizes the Leader’s exceptional contributions to their SI program.

Evaluation Criteria

     

  • Evidence of quality contribution and impact to student learning and development of SI learning culture
  • Understanding of SI learning theory as demonstrated by practical experiences as a leader
  • Demonstration of outstanding performance, commitment to, and leadership within SI

Nomination Instructions

Below is a list of documents that must be included in the Outstanding SI Leader Nomination. Please submit the documents in one PDF document through the online SI Award Nomination form.

     

  • Submit a double-spaced biographical essay referencing nominee’s tenure on the SI team and include evidence and examples of how nominee’s service as an SI Leader has “Shaped the SI Story” on campus and how it has shaped nominee’s personal story(2 page limit), OR
  • Optional Alternative: include a link to a video (no more than 2 minutes) that references nominee’s tenure on the SI team and includes evidence and examples of how nominee’s service as an SI Leader has “Shaped the SI Story” on campus and how it has shaped nominee’s personal story
  • Submit 1 letter of support from nominee’s faculty member and 1 letter of support from the nominee’s SI Leader colleagues
  • Submit a complete SI session plan from the most recent semester
  • Provide link to a brief video interview (1 minute max) with the SI Leader’s supervisor in which they discuss their experiences with the nominee, including how the SI Leader has “Shaped the SI Story” at their institution

 

Outstanding SI Mentor – Open to all

SI Mentors are critical to many successful SI programs for their support, adherence to SI best practices, and leadership. This award seeks to recognize Mentors whose efforts uplift and advance their SI programs.

Evaluation Criteria

     

  • Evidence of quality contribution and impact to SI Leader learning and development
  • Understanding of SI learning theory as demonstrated by practical experiences as a Mentor
  • Demonstration of outstanding performance, commitment to and leadership within SI

Nomination Instructions

Below is a list of documents that must be included in the Outstanding SI Mentor Nomination. Please submit the documents in one PDF document through the online SI Award Nomination form.

     

  • Submit a double-spaced biographical essay referencing nominee’s tenure on the SI team and include evidence and examples of how nominee’s service as an SI Mentor has “Shaped the SI Story” on campus and how it has shaped nominee’s personal story (2 page limit), OR
  • Optional Alternative: include a link to a video (no more than 2 minutes) that references nominee’s tenure on the SI team and includes evidence and examples of how nominee’s services as an SI Mentor has “Shaped the SI Story” on campus and how it has shaped nominee’s personal story
  • Submit a sample observation form completed by the nominee from the most recent academic term
  • Submit a sample meeting/training activity plan created by the nominee during the most recent academic term
  • Provide a link to a brief video interview (1 minutes max) with one of the SI Mentor’s mentees in which they discuss their experiences with the nominee, including how the SI Mentor has helped “Shape their SI Story”

 

Outstanding SI Research and/or Publication – Open to all

This award honors significant contributions to the field of SI. This may include publications, theses or dissertations, or published and unpublished projects. The winner will be invited to present his or her work at the SI Conference.

Evaluation Criteria

     

  • Significance to the field of Supplemental Instruction
  • Theoretical/research basis or relevance/suitability
  • Quality of writing and/or layout and design

Nomination Instructions

Below is a list of documents that must be included in the Outstanding SI Research and/or Publication Nomination. Please submit the documents in one PDF document through the online SI Award Nomination form.

     

  • Submit letter of nomination summarizing the significance to the field of SI
  • Submit at least one letter of endorsement from an expert in the field
  • Submit an electronic copy of the article, book, monograph or publication, and any links to websites containing additional multi-media

 

Outstanding SI Innovation – Open to all

This award honors creativity in adapting an SI program to meet the needs of students in an ever-changing academic landscape. Consideration will be given to innovations in programs that adhere to the traditional tenets of the UMKC model of Supplemental Instruction, as well as non-traditional SI programs such as online, hybrid, or mandatory Supplemental Instruction.

Evaluation Criteria

     

  • Evidence of impact and effectiveness on your SI program
  • Evidence of adherence to the best practices of Supplemental Instruction (robust SI Leader training and support, strong focus on planning, SI Leader attendance in lecture)

Nomination Instructions

Below is a list of documents that must be included in the Outstanding SI Innovation Nomination. Please submit the documents in one PDF document through the online SI Award Nomination form.

     

  • Submit a background narrative describing the impetus for the innovation and its impact on your SI program (2 page limit)
  • Submit 2 letters of support from campus administrators (1) and SI Leaders (1) that outline the impact of the innovation on the campus and program
  • Provide supporting materials that document the innovation (e.g. proposals, grant reports, marketing materials, planning forms, job descriptions, etc.)
