Work study student is just getting started with career plans

“I then decided to hang up my track shoes and put all my focus into getting my degree,” she said. “When I started doing my research, I found out that UMKC had a really good Criminal Justice program. Also, I wanted to go to a big school, but I wanted the teachers to know my name. Here at UMKC, the campus is big, but the ratio of students to teachers allows you to get that one-on-one with your teachers as you would at a small campus.”

Bria said she enjoys being around different people every day in her job.

“I learn so much from everyone’s different ways of doing things, which will help me better my future,” she said. “I also get an early start of knowledge on what to expect when I attend graduate school.”

After finishing her bachelor’s degree, Bria plans to attend graduate school to attain a higher Criminal Justice degree at UMKC.

“Once I get my degree, I plan on becoming a homicide detective and maybe even be a detective on the television show ‘First 48,’” she said.

Bria said UMKC is a wonderful school.

“I am glad I chose to go here!” she said. “UMKC has a wonderful staff lineup and the teachers here are willing to help you obtain your degree.”

When Bria was little, she wanted to be a teacher.

“The majority of my family members are teachers and that was all I knew,” she said. “Once I was old enough to understand what all they had to do, I realized that I probably would not have the patience to grade paperwork and come up with lesson plans every night.”

We in the School of Graduate Studies are certainly glad Bria chose a different career path and UMKC. Welcome to the team, Bria!
