Multiple Awards Presented at the School of Graduate Studies Annual Convocation on April 25, 2012

This year, the School of Graduate Studies (SGS) and the Interdisciplinary Doctoral Student Council (IDSC) joined forces to combine the Annual SGS Awards Convocation with the IDSC Community of Scholars Research Day Celebration.  As Master of Ceremonies, Dr.Denis Medeiros, Dean of the School of Graduate Studies, welcomed the many guests; and Constance Smith Mahone, Manager of Graduate Student Services presented the following awards:

Superior Graduate Teaching Assistant Awards:

Distinguished Master’s Thesis Award presented to:

  • Kristin Griffeath, M.S. Musicology   (Thesis adviser: Dr. Sarah Tyrrell) for her thesis titled, “War Sirens: How the Sheet Music Industry Sold World War I”

Outstanding Dissertation Award presented to:

  • Ryan Jesperson, DMA Music Composition (Dissertation advisor: Dr. Chen Yi) for his dissertation titled, “Songs from Behind the Curtain: An Opera in Three Acts”

Interdisciplinary Ph.D. Community of Scholars Research Poster Contest:  A total of 37 Interdisciplinary Ph.D. students submitted research posters.  A panel of faculty judged the posters and selected the following four entries as the best in each broad research category represented.  The winners each received a prize of $500, provided by the School of Graduate Studies.
