We bid you adieu: Brittany McPherson

Now an alumna of the undergraduate sociology program, Brittany McPherson was a Work Study student in the School of Graduate Studies for more than 2 years. Along with her office duties like organizing student files and answering the phones, Brittany was also the smiling face we could all count on to brighten our day.

Brittany said her favorite aspect of the job was working together, including work projects and school projects.

“When I needed help, it didn’t matter who I went to and asked – they would always help,” she said.

She said the thing she’ll miss most is the flexibility of the position.

“They always worked with my availability, including giving me the time I needed for classes and assignments,” she said.

School of Graduate Studies staff members have many positive memories of Brittany’s time with us.

“She was reserved when she first started,” said Colleen Kelly, Project Director. “It’s been exciting to watch her grow in her academic and personal goals and gain confidence in her abilities. It’s like pushing your little bird from the nest.”

“She was always singing and humming,” said Alphia Curry, Administrative Associate. “She would readily do whatever you asked of her.”

Brittany said prospective students should choose UMKC for its diversity and for all the resources it has for students. She chose UMKC for its diversity and its proximity from her home, Saint Louis.

“It was far from home, but close enough to go back whenever I wanted to,” she said.

For now, Brittany is back in Saint Louis looking to begin her career working in group homes with juvenile delinquents or at-risk youth. She plans to return to UMKC in 2015 to start her Master’s program in Social Work.
