Gregory Wright, Assistant Power Plant Superintendent, Harry S. Truman Power Plant, provided 18 UMKC MSPE student chapter engineering students from the UMKC School of Computing and Engineering and their invited guests a comprehensive tour of the Harry S. Truman Dam and Power Plant in Warsaw MO. Harry S. Truman Dam has six turbines and controls two smaller hydro-electric dams power production via remote control. Leaving UMKC at 7:30 am on Oct. 25, 2010, the students and their guests arrived Warsaw MO at 10 am and were met a the gate by Gregory Wright. The tour started with displays on how hydro-electric power is produced and then students were provided access to much of the entire facility, including the “no picture” control room where UMKC engineering student Taya Upkes was given the priviledge of “starting up” turbine number 5 and bringing it up to full power production. The one hour scheduled tour, turned to two and one half hours, as students asked many questions and utilized this learning experience to the maximum. The tour was followed with lunch at Warsaw’s Maxine’s Restaurant and then a return drive back to UMKC.
