2013 E-Week Blood Drive Breaks Past Records

Despite a blizzard which cancelled classes during E-Week 2013, the E-week Blood Drive sponsored by Engineers without Borders (EWB) and Missouri Society of Professional Engineers (MSPE/NSPE) student organizations was a huge success. Seventy (70) units of blood were collected by the Community Blood Center (CBC) resulting in the 5th annual E-Week drive exceeding past records. Congratulations and a huge thank you to our donors and supporters – they are the ones that made this drive rock! The 70 units donated far surpassed the CBC’s goals for our drive (60 units) and we increased the amount of blood collected from last year by 7% (65 units collected in 2012, 59 units in 2011 and 38 in 2010). With 96 potential donors we exceeded the previous 2012 record of 91 potential donors and with 40 first time donors we nearly tied the 2011 record of 43 first time donors. Each year, the E-week blood drive is coordinated by Jane Vogl who volunteers as the SCE site coordinator for the CBC and is the staff advisor to the MSPE student chapter. Jane says it is her favorite volunteer activity because “it is so heart-warming to see the students, faculty and staff turn out to save lives.”

SCE students have Pizza with the President!

On September 29, 2011 SCE students enjoyed a Pizza with the President Info Session with the National Society of Professional Engineers (NSPE) President Christopher Stone, P.E., F.NSPE. Students learned why Professional Engineering (P.E.) licensure is important and how it extends careers by broadening the responsibilities and leadership opportunities for engineers that achieve P.E. licensure. For the past 7 years the incoming NSPE president has included a morning at SCE as part of the NSPE president’s annual visit to Kansas City, the 4th largest engineering hub in the nation.

The meet and greet with President Chris Stone, P.E. and his delegation, prior to the info session, was attended by SCE Dean Kevin Truman, NSPE/MSPE student chapter President Jason Painter, Webmaster Taya Upkes, Treasurer Michael “Tyler” Martin, and faculty advisors Dr. Khosrow Sohraby, P.E. and Dr. Jesse Sherwood, P.E. A visit to Linda Hall Library, considered by many to be the world’s greatest private, not-for-profit science, engineering and technology library, and just one block from SCE’s Flarsheim Hall was also arranged. The UMKC MSPE/NSPE student chapter is affiliated to NSPE on the national level and is locally mentored and provided sponsorship by the Western Chapter of the Missouri Society of Professional Engineers here in Kansas City.

NSPE President Michael Hardy Visits SCE!

The president of the National Society of Professional Engineers (NSPE) visited SCE September 16, 2010 during his visit to Kansas City. The SCE NSPE Student Chapter, one of the largest in the country, hosted a Pizza with the President luncheon where SCE engineering students were able to discuss their professional licensure questions and learn more about the steps needed to achieve professional licensure. President Hardy and his delegation also had lively meetings SCE faculty discussing faculty licensure issues and learning more about SCE faculty research areas and applications. Late afternoon found President Hardy as the featured guest on SCE Associate Professor Deborah O’Bannon’s KCMO 710 radio show, Building Kansas City.  He ended his day at the MSPE WC and KSPE EC dinner meeting where he spoke on the value of networking.  Eleven NSPE student chapter members from UMKC SCE attended the dinner.
