baja-main

It’s been a fantastic year for the UMKC Baja Racing Team, competing in 3 races this year culminating in winning 9th in design and 21st overall (in field of 118 vehicles) at the June 4-7 SAE competition held in Peoria, IL . The Peoria race was the third and fiercest competition of the year as each vehicle entered reflected continual improvements from lessons learned in the earlier two races.  The Baja SAE UTEP held April 24-27, 2014 in El Paso, TX found the UMKC Baja vehicle scoring 12th in maneuverability and 38th Overall.   The Baja SAE Kansas held May 22-25, 2014 Pittsburg, KS resulted in 6th in sled pull and 7th in sales presentation and 41st Overall.   Complete results for all three 2014 races are now posted.

In each race the UMKC Baja Racing Team received the top overall score of Missouri universities competing and was second behind Kansas State for Kansas universities. Congratulations to the team members, officers and advisors participating in the competitions!

UMKC EWB Students Commit to Building Bridge in Vallecito, Panama

Survey Calibration, EWB

Engineers Without Borders (EWB) student chapter has committed to building a foot bridge in Vallecito, Panama starting 2013-2014. In Fall 2012, the EWB student chapter decided it was time to depart from the Dominican Republic, where it had been working with the support of the EWB Kansas City (KC) professional chapter since 2009, because the projects left to be completed were beyond the scope of the students. Over the next two years, only EWB KC professional chapter members will travel to the Dominican to finalize the program. Thus the UMKC EWB student chapter members starting looking for a new program. While there were lots of opportunities in Africa, SCE students decided to stay in the America’s due to logistical costs. After reviewing options, it was decided that Panama would be a good place to pursue a new program as EWB-Panama needed help with building footbridges. Incentives for choosing Panama included one of the EWB mentors being a native of Panama with her mother living in Panama City and a member of EWB-Panama.

SCE Students Help with Model Bridge Building Contest

January 26, 2013 marked the tenth year that SCE engineering students, Professor Ganesh Thiagajaran and Engineering Research Technician Pat O’Bannon have happily provided logistics and volunteers for the 30th Annual Model Bridge Building Competition which is organized and sponsored by the Western Chapter of the Missouri Society of Professional Engineers (MSPE). SCE engineering students Tim Hines, Bhargav Javvaji, Clark Johnson, Bhavani Ramneedi, Sean Rivers and Jerome Shin loaded and measured each of the 11 model bridge entries and carefully recorded results. Under the direction of Contest Chairperson Jim Guthrie, DE, PE, bridges were tested while their high school student builders and their teacher mentors experienced memorable demonstrations on how truss-type bridge design must include attention to individual member and global requirements, and the economics of the lightest bridge for the largest applied load.

Everyone found out the maximum load their bridge could withstand as weight was added until the bridges broke. The purpose of the testing was to determine the most efficient bridge as all were constructed per the contest rules and specifications provided by the 2013 International Bridge Building Contest. The winning bridge spanned 300 mm, weighed 22.3 grams, and supported 62.5 pounds of sand (28,349.4 grams) for an efficiency rating of 1,271.3. Cash prizes of $150, $75 and $50 will be awarded to the builder and teacher mentor of the three most efficient bridges at the 2013 Engineers Week Luncheon which is attended by hundreds of practicing engineers.
