Unique Summer Program Draws Students from Saudi Arabia

Fourteen students and their two accompanying professors from Jazan University in Saudi Arabia left for home after a five-week summer program held here at SCE.  Designed to be both intellectually and culturally enriching, the program included the students learning about software methods and tools from Professor Yongjie Zheng, mobile apps and cloud computing from Professor Yugi Lee, and about big data from Professor Praveen Rao.  They then created their own app for Jazan University with the help of the Kansas City-based RareWire app creation studio.  UMKC’s Applied Language Institute provided the students English instruction for two hours each day.  In addition, students and faculty ventured beyond campus to visit and tour Cerner, Garmin and Sprint and enjoy local attractions such as the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, the Kansas City Royals and Starlight Theatre.  SCE Continuing Education Director Christina Davis, managed the program including preliminary discussions with Jazan University, curriculum, and program logistics.  For more details, see the UMKC Today article “Students from Saudi Arabia Study at UMKC School of Computing and Engineering.”

Certificate in Engineering and Construction Project Management Announced

Working professionals in engineering and construction can now earn a 12 credit-hour graduate-level Certificate in Engineering and Construction Project Management in the School of Computing and Engineering (SCE) at the University of Missouri-Kansas City. The certificate program is designed to cover the key areas critical to the successful planning and completion of construction projects. “Construction and engineering companies are increasingly emphasizing project management skills for those who hold technical degrees,” said Kevin Truman, Dean of the School of Computing and Engineering. “With this program, working professionals can add to their skill sets and become better positioned to be successful in their organizations.” Students in the program will attend convenient evening classes taught by an expert faculty of professional engineers, bringing the most up-to-date experience into the classroom. Engineers successfully completing graduate certificate courses may be eligible to have credits applied toward a Master of Civil Engineering degree. SCE Continuing Education Director Christina Davis developed and implemented this exciting new program. SCE provides CGSC officers continuing education opportunities

SCE is working closely with LTC Kevin Casey at the US Army’s Command and General Staff College (CGSC) at Ft. Leavenworth to provide CGSC officers new continuing education opportunities in Project Management Professional (PMP) certification preparation, Civil Professional Engineer (PE) exam preparation, and other career credentials. On July 26 Christina Davis, SCE Continuing Education Director, traveled to Ft. Leavenworth to talk with the Engineer Officers of CGSC class 13-01. Following her visit, 45 Engineer Majors from Fort Leavenworth Command and General Staff (CGSC) class 13-01 and their guests traveled to Kansas City for an exciting welcome reception hosted by the Society of American Military Engineers (SAME) Greater Kansas City Post. Over 100 people attended this first-time event and enjoyed an outstanding Kansas City BBQ dinner in the setting of the Boulevard Brewery event room with Kansas City’s downtown skyline and the World War I Liberty Memorial towering high above as a backdrop. This event highlighted an on-going effort to improve the military – academia – industry goals of the Army Engineer Regiment at the end of an exciting week of Engineer training highlighting continuing professional education.

At the reception, Brigadier General Peter A. DeLuca, Commandant of the U.S Army Engineer School, addressed the group encouraging them to improve their engineer skills during CGSC by obtaining career credentials such Project Management Professional ( PMP), or Licensed Professional Engineer (PE) while networking with professional engineer organizations. SAME GKC Post Vice President Matt L. Metcalf, P.E. emceed the festivities and UMKC SCE Dean Kevin Truman welcomed the CGSC officers to Kansas City. Dean Truman, SCE, UMKC and the GKC SAME Post have worked together for several years, partnering to offer continuing education via Industry Day, SAME Regional and monthly meetings and a six week civil PE review course. LTC Kevin R. Casey, CGSC instructor at Ft Leavenworth introduced the class profile: 49 Army Engineers, 3 Navy Seabees, and 2 Air Force Engineers in class 13-01. 90% of these officers have had 2 or more combat tours; 22% have just returned from a deployment in the last 6 months; and over 80% had not yet experienced downtown Kansas City prior to this enjoyable event. Post VP Metcalf invited the officers to join their SAME professional society and described the many activities undertaken by the SAME Greater Kansas City Post designated a Distinguished Post in 2011. SCE is proud to of its relationships with the GKC SAME Post which includes their sponsorship of our UMKC SAME student chapter.
