Civil Engineering Students Take First Place at ACI Mortar Workability Competition

UMKC Civil Engineering students won the American Concrete Institute (ACI) Mortar Workability Competition. Our UMKC ACI team was awarded a certificate and award money at the 2013 ACI Spring Convention student awards luncheon held on Sunday, April 14, in Minneapolis, MN. In addition, their pictures will be featured in an upcoming ACI Concrete International magazine article. The undergraduate CE students winning the award were Andy O’Laughlin, Jon Lamanes, Jade Rodell-Tipton, and Antonio Sanchez. The graduate student advisors were Claire Cao, Tim Hines, and Mayuri Patil. Dr. John Kevern is the ACI faculty advisor.

John Kevern Receives ACI Young Member Award!

 

Dr. John Kevern accepts the ACI Young Member awardAssociate Professor John Kevern received the ACI (American Concrete Institute) Young Member Award for Professional Achievement at the 2013 ACI Spring Convention Opening Session and Awards Program on April 14, 2013 in Minneapolis, MN. Dr. Kevern was honored “for contributions to concrete technology, including concrete research, technical publications, presentations in multiple forums, service on ACI technical committees, and leadership in the education of students.” Congratulations, Dr. Kevern!

UMKC recognized as an ACI Excellent University

UMKC has been recognized by the American Concrete Institute (ACI) as an ACI Excellent University. Only 16 universities received this award in 2012! The congratulations letter from ACI notes that the award “was initiated to recognize universities that have participated in ACI-related activities.” CE faculty Ceki Halmen, John Kevern and Ganesh Thiagarajan are ACI student chapter faculty advisors. The ACI student chapter received awards at the ACI Missouri Concrete Conference in April 2012 and has been very active throughout the year.

Civil Engineering Students Win Awards at ACI Missouri Concrete conference

Our American Concrete Institute (ACI) student chapter brought home top awards from the ACI Missouri Concrete Conference held on April 26, 2012 at MS&T in Rolla. The conference featured two student competitions organized by construction industry professionals attending the conference. Civil Engineering (CE) senior Kevin Buck won 1st place in the undergraduate poster competition and Master’s CE student Gunjan Sheye won 3rd place in the graduate poster competition. It was clear that team work pays off when CE senior Andrew O’Laughlin and Gunjan Shetye won 1st place for best artistic concrete. The winners were awarded cash prizes sponsored by the ACI Missouri chapter. Completing its first year as a student organization, our UMKC ACI student chapter can take pride in its achievements. CE faculty Ceki Halmen, John Kevern and Ganesh Thiagarajan are ACI student chapter faculty advisors.
