Two SCE student leaders received UMKC SGA Awards at the May 5, 2014 SGA Leadership Awards Banquet. Mechanical engineering freshman Torshawna Griffin received the UMKC SGA Emerging Leader Award, given to a freshman, sophomore or first year transfer student whose energy and vision revitalized their student org or council. Mechanical engineering graduating senior Sierra Shipley received the UMKC SGA Best Leader of a Student Organization, the highest award given to a student organization leader. Sierra is the 2013-2014 president of the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE). These awards are given to 13 student leaders annually. Nominations for the awards are evaluated by the SGA executive board which selects each years’ recipients. Congratulations Torshawna and Sierra!
Elliott Goff, a UMKC SCE mechanical engineering graduate student has been awarded the prestigious Whitaker Fellowship from the Whitaker International Program to spend a year conducting research in Zurich at the Institute for Biomechanics at Eidgenössische Technische Hochschule (ETH).
Delegates of the Canik Başari University of Samsun, Turkey, President Yunus Bekdemir and Chair Ferhat Ozturk, visited UMKC on Monday, April 28, to initiate a student and faculty exchange program between our two universities, with the mediation of Dr. Aydin, Executive Director of the Dialogue Institute of the Southwest. They were warmly welcomed by UMKC Vice Provost and SCE Dean, Kevin Truman, and international student affairs officer, Nigyar Dzhafarova.
SCE Ph.D. student MD. Nahid Hossain recently received funding for his research, “Radiation Hardened Multilayer Graphene Nanoribbon Flash Memory”. His project is funded by a $7000 UMKC School of Graduate Studies (SGS) Research Grant.
SCE Associate Professor Reza Derakhshani has been named a 2014 recipient of the N.T. Veatch Award For Distinguished Research and Creative Activity. The award recognizes distinguished research and other scholarly activities or creative activity accomplished by UMKC faculty. Continue reading
SCE is excited about the recent UMKC announcement that the Robert W. Plaster Foundation of Lebanon, Mo., has made a significant contribution to support a new Free Enterprise Center on UMKC’s Volker Campus. The Plaster Foundation’s contribution, described as “a significant seven-figure gift,” follows a $5 million pledge last fall from the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation.
The American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) student chapter at UMKC recently received a letter of honorable mention for the many activities that they organized and attended.
During the 2013 calendar year, the ASCE student chapter helped organize over 16 unique activities, ranging from a charity golf tournament to highway cleanups. In addition, they also held several joint meetings with the local ASCE section and Geotech committee.
Mike Kelly, P.E. was recently honored with the 2013-2014 Leadership Excellence Achievement Program (LEAP) Award, which was established by the Missouri Society of Professional Engineers Western Chapter (MSPE WC) in 2005. Continue reading
The E-Week Blood Drive on February 26 sponsored by Engineers without Borders (EWB) and the Missouri Society of Professional Engineers (MSPE) student chapter registered a total of 89 donors and collected 64 units of blood for local Kansas City hospitals.
