SCE Blood Drive makes notable impact

The E-Week Blood Drive on February 26 sponsored by Engineers without Borders (EWB) and the Missouri Society of Professional Engineers (MSPE) student chapter registered a total of 89 donors and collected 64 units of blood for local Kansas City hospitals. There were 26 first time donors.

This annual drive and three others held each year by the UMKC School of Computing and Engineering (SCE) have helped UMKC be recognized by the Community Blood Center (CBC) as a Community Star Group for collecting more than 400 units of blood in a year. In 2013, UMKC collected 625 units campus wide. This is the third year in a row UMKC has been named a Community Star Group.

Jane Vogl, Assistant to the Dean and MSPE Staff Advisor, is the site coordinator for SCE drives. This year she was honored to accept the Community Star Group award for UMKC at the March 5, 2014 CBC Celebration of Giving Luncheon.

“It takes hundreds of students, faculty and staff from all UMKC schools working together to collect 625 units of blood,” said Vogl. “I am thrilled to have played a small part in reaching this awesome goal.”
