EyeVerify Winner of Global Get in the Ring Competition

EyeVerify recently won the global finals of the “Get in the Ring: The Investment Battle” competition.  The global competition was held on Friday, Nov. 22, 2013, just four days after the National competition held in Kansas City, MO.  EyeVerify’s CEO, Toby Rush, traveled to the Netherlands for the International Finals of the competition, which were held at the Hulstkamp Gebouw in Rotterdam.  At the finals, eight startups, including EyeVerify, competed for a grand prize of up to €1,000,000.

Before advancing to the global competition, EyeVerify competed against eight different startups in the “Get in the Ring: The American Startup Clash” competition.  The national contest was held Monday, Nov. 18, 2013, with the United States finalists, selected from a pool of 283 startups, vying for the national title.

EyeVerify is a Kansas City, KS startup based on technology developed by UMKC School of Computing and Engineering Associate Professor Dr. Reza Derakhshani.

SAE Baja Racing Team Gears Up For the Season with a New Fundraiser

Our UMKC SAE Baja Racing Team partnered with the Mid-America Packards to host a gala fundraiser on Oct. 26 at the exclusive, privately owned Armacost museum which features a rare collection of antique and vintage vehicles.  Attended by over 150 guests, the Armacost Gala and Dinner featured Dr. Steve Christy, National President of the Packard Club, as a speaker.  All funds, materials and in-kind donations raised will go toward helping the rapidly growing SAE Baja Racing Team build an additional competition vehicle, fund travel to one more competition and save some funds towards a travel trailer.

SCE Faculty Host Regional Security Workshop

Drs. Baek-Young Choi and Deep Medhi, professors at the UMKC School of Computing and Engineering, recently hosted KanSec, a regional security workshop, on Saturday, Nov 2nd at Pierson Auditorium on UMKC’s campus.

The workshop brought together 65 researchers and practitioners from 18 institutions and 7 states. Participants were able to share new developments and discuss ideas pertaining to computer and communication security.  The program also included two keynote speeches, nine paper presentations, an industry panel, and a poster session.

During the workshop, several research projects on cloud and smartphone security were presented, and a panel discussion provided insightful perspectives on preventing next generation DoS (Denial of Service) attacks.

SCE Scholarship Donors Honored at Recognition Luncheon

The School of Computing and Engineering honored our scholarship donors and student scholars on Oct. 18 at the 2013 Donor and Student Scholarship Recognition Luncheon held at Pierson Auditorium in the Atterbury Student Success Center.

Many SCE computer science, engineering and information technology students rely on the scholarship assistance provided to them as they complete their degree.  This year, a record number of 70 student scholars received SCE scholarship awards.  Each award represents the generosity and foresight of the families, individuals and companies that have established a SCE scholarship fund.

DBIA Student Chapter Wins Regional Competition for Second Consecutive Year

The Design-Build Institute of America (DBIA) student chapter at UMKC recently won the regional DBIA Student Competition for the second year in a row.  The team consisted of four UMKC students and two faculty advisors.

SCE Alumni Divya Ketharnath Receives Scholarship to Pursue Ph.D.

UMKC School of Computing and Engineering alumni, Divya Ketharnath (M.S.E.E. 2008), was recently awarded an esteemed scholarship to continue pursuing her Ph.D. in electrical engineering at the University of Houston, where she is conducting nanoparticle research for cancer therapy applications.

SCE Students Participate in Google Community Leaders Program

Out of eight UMKC students selected to participate in the Google Community Leaders program, five are from UMKC’s School of Computing and Engineering.

The Google Community Leaders program is designed to provide small business owners and other community organizations with tools and resources to build an online presence, and to improve the web literacy of Kansas City.  The program will last for one year, giving the students the opportunity to train these organizations and narrow the digital divide.
