SCE students and staff were prime movers in ensuring two one-week Google Fiber Summer App Camps held this July at SCE were great successes. Matt Mohler, electrical computer engineering junior, IEEE Robotics team member and SCE Student Ambassador, served as the director for both camps. Using MIT’s App Inventor software and hands-on instructional techniques, students learned how to develop applications for Android platform phones. 17 Kansas City Missouri School District high school students and one teacher participated in the first camp session and 21 Kansas City Kansas School District high school students and two teachers participated in the second camp session.
Matt set both camps’ schedules, modified and appended a pre-existing curriculum to fit the camps’ educational objectives, set goals for students to accomplish, coordinated and scheduled the lab assistants and taught class each day. Three SCE students – David Elge (ECE), Mladen Kojic (ECE) and James Wehmueller (CS) served as lab assistants, providing mentoring and 1-on-1 instruction. SCE staff members Whitney Lewis, Whitney Molloy, Valeri Reynolds and Jodi Vinnage provided direction and support services, working closely with Matt and the lab assistants to ensure that the needs of the participants were met during the camps’ planning and implementation.
At the end of each camp on Friday afternoons, July 19 and July 26, students presented their projects at the Google Fiber Camp App Presentation and Awards Reception hosted at Google’s Fiber Space in Westport. Attended by industry representatives, students’ parents, district teachers, Google Fiber representatives camp staff and participants, the students had an opportunity to showcase their work. Their presentations included development cycle plans, identification of target audience demographics, and marketing and sales plans. Industry executives, teachers, community leaders and UMKC faculty served as judges. Awards were presented for all the categories shown in the Award List below.
