170 SCE undergraduate, master’s and doctoral students graduated May 17, 2013 from the School of Computing and Engineering at the 2013 UMKC Commencement ceremony in the Swinney Recreation Center.  Commencement was preceded by the dean’s breakfast reception attended by 320 graduates and their guests.  Greg Graves, P.E., Chairman and CEO of Burns & McDonnell, a full-service engineering, architecture, construction, environmental and consulting solutions firm, was the keynote speaker.  He talked about how his favorite college teacher changed his life with this observation, “Hey Greg, the only thing that matters in life is to matter in life.”  Embracing this simple commitment changes how we approach our lives and provides to each of us the greatest level of happiness.  Greg noted that computer scientists, engineers and information technologists have learned skills and abilities that make them matter greatly to society and encouraged the graduates to use these to achieve new technologies, processes and products and to keep our nation safe.  As we say goodbye to the UMKC SCE Class of 2013, Dean Kevin Truman and the UMKC SCE faculty and staff congratulate all of the graduates on their achievements!  We know that each of you will matter and thank you for accepting nothing less.
