Dr. Vijay Kumar Discusses Cellphone Security on 41 News

Dr. Vijay Kumar, Professor of Computer Science, talked with 41 News about cellphone security on December 18, 2012. According to the 41 News story, “University of Missouri-Kansas City computer science professor Vijay Kumar said hackers are always one step ahead of security designers. If you do want to add anti-virus software to your cellphone, you’ll likely trade off battery life. “Every half an hour you have to charge the battery because you want to make it fully secure,” Kumar said. Even though mobile phones are not the prime target right now, Kumar suggests that users who send sensitive information through text or email develop a code with those who are receiving it so strangers won’t be able to take advantage of it.”

Dr. Masud Chowdhury Elected to Chair IEEE VSA Technical Committee

At the annual symposium of the IEEE Circuits and Systems Society held at Seoul, South Korea this Summer 2012, Dr. Masud Chowdhury was unanimously elected as the Future Chair of the IEEE VLSI Systems and Applications (IEEE VSA) Technical Committee (TC). Installed in October 2012 as the Chair-Elect/Secretary of IEEE VSA TC, Dr. Chowdhury will serve in this capacity for the next two years. He will then become the Chair of IEEE VSA TC in 2014. SCE congratulates Dr. Masud Chowdhury on his being selected by his IEEE peers for these critical positions. We are proud of his service to his profession and know that his students will benefit from this service. It is a great honor for UMKC and SCE that the IEEE Circuits and Systems Society selected Dr. Masud Chowdhry, Associate Professor in the Department of Computer Science Electrical Engineering to chair the IEEE VSA TC.

IEEE VSA TC oversees VLSI (Very Large Scale Integrated Circuits) related sessions and activities in IEEE Circuits and Systems Society’s flagship conference International Symposium on Circuits and Systems (ISCAS) and six other IEEE conferences (MWSCAS, NEWCAS, GLSVLSI, APCCAS, LASCAS and ICECS). This committee also supervises special issues of IEEE Transactions on VLSI (TVLSI), which is the leading journal in this area.

Notre Dame de Sion and SCE kick off new partnership

Members of the UMKC Society of Women Engineers (SWE) student chapter, along with Professor Katherine Bloemker, attended a breakfast hosted by Notre Dame de Sion high school on Friday, November 30, for students interested in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) careers.

The breakfast kicks off a new and exciting partnership between the UMKC School of Computing and Engineering (SCE) and Notre Dame de Sion as part of SCE’s Adopt-A-School program which connects an SCE professor with an area high school. A graduate of Sion, Professor Bloemker selected her alma mater for this program in hopes of raising interest in STEM fields among female students.

More than 20 high school students and five SWE members attended. SWE members shared their experiences in choosing a major, what it is like to study a STEM field in college and post-graduation plans. Following a panel discussion, the students enjoyed breakfast and visited in small groups where they were able to ask questions and engage in lively conversation.
