SCE provides CGSC officers continuing education opportunities

SCE is working closely with LTC Kevin Casey at the US Army’s Command and General Staff College (CGSC) at Ft. Leavenworth to provide CGSC officers new continuing education opportunities in Project Management Professional (PMP) certification preparation, Civil Professional Engineer (PE) exam preparation, and other career credentials. On July 26 Christina Davis, SCE Continuing Education Director, traveled to Ft. Leavenworth to talk with the Engineer Officers of CGSC class 13-01. Following her visit, 45 Engineer Majors from Fort Leavenworth Command and General Staff (CGSC) class 13-01 and their guests traveled to Kansas City for an exciting welcome reception hosted by the Society of American Military Engineers (SAME) Greater Kansas City Post. Over 100 people attended this first-time event and enjoyed an outstanding Kansas City BBQ dinner in the setting of the Boulevard Brewery event room with Kansas City’s downtown skyline and the World War I Liberty Memorial towering high above as a backdrop. This event highlighted an on-going effort to improve the military – academia – industry goals of the Army Engineer Regiment at the end of an exciting week of Engineer training highlighting continuing professional education.

At the reception, Brigadier General Peter A. DeLuca, Commandant of the U.S Army Engineer School, addressed the group encouraging them to improve their engineer skills during CGSC by obtaining career credentials such Project Management Professional ( PMP), or Licensed Professional Engineer (PE) while networking with professional engineer organizations. SAME GKC Post Vice President Matt L. Metcalf, P.E. emceed the festivities and UMKC SCE Dean Kevin Truman welcomed the CGSC officers to Kansas City. Dean Truman, SCE, UMKC and the GKC SAME Post have worked together for several years, partnering to offer continuing education via Industry Day, SAME Regional and monthly meetings and a six week civil PE review course. LTC Kevin R. Casey, CGSC instructor at Ft Leavenworth introduced the class profile: 49 Army Engineers, 3 Navy Seabees, and 2 Air Force Engineers in class 13-01. 90% of these officers have had 2 or more combat tours; 22% have just returned from a deployment in the last 6 months; and over 80% had not yet experienced downtown Kansas City prior to this enjoyable event. Post VP Metcalf invited the officers to join their SAME professional society and described the many activities undertaken by the SAME Greater Kansas City Post designated a Distinguished Post in 2011.
