E-Week Blood Drive Huge Success

Our E-Week blood drive on Feb. 18th, sponsored by UMKC’s student chapter of Engineers Without Borders (EWB) attracted over 60 donors wanting to participate, with 41 being first time donors! Thirty-eight (38) units of blood were actually collected, with each unit being able to help two persons. This well exceeded the Community Blood Center’s goal of 30 units. Fantastic!

The involvement and participation of our student organizations in E-Week activities is a great opportunity for our School’s students to develop and expand their organizational and leadership skills, promote the pursuit of engineering careers, and have fun too.

A number of EWB members participated in making the drive a huge success, helping the Community Blood Center with all of their logistical needs. EWB members provided tremendous support; soliciting participation weeks prior to the event, helping set-up, manning the blood drive table, soliciting walk-in traffic and serving as needed throughout the entire day.

It is hard work to define the goals and objectives of an activity and then organize, advertise and successfully implement the activity.

S.A.M.E. Industry Day well attended by SCE Students & Faculty

The Society of American Military Engineers (S.A.M.E.) 2010 Greater Kansas City Post Industry Day Education and Training Workshop was extremely well attended by SCE students and faculty! UMKC’s Pierson Auditorium was filled on Feb. 3rd with representatives from Kansas City’s engineering community and from across the nation.

SCE students attended free and were able to learn more about potential career paths in their discipline areas and network with many companies. The session , Young Engineers – What to Expect Early in Your Professional Career, was well attended by our students. SCE thanks the presenters, Matt Metcalf from Tughill Construction and Ann Ewy from the USACE KC District, for providing this opportunity to our students.

New SCE Scholarship Honors past Burns & McDonnell president Newt A. Campbell

Dean Truman and Mr. Newt Campbell The University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) Foundation and the School of Computing and Engineering are pleased to announce and acknowledge an endowed scholarship gift to the School of Computing and Engineering. Kansas City, The Missoruri.based engineering firm Burns & McDonnell created the Newton A. Campbell Engineering Excellence Scholarship in honor of Mr. Newton A. “Newt” Campbell – the firm’s fourth president. The Burns & McDonnell Foundation is donating $100,000 to establish the scholarship and has pledged to donate an additional $150,000 over the next five years.

“The UMKC School of Computing and Engineering is very grateful to Burns & McDonnell for providing the Newton A. Campbell Engineering Excellence Scholarship,” SCE Dean Kevin Truman said. “Mr. Campbell made Burns & McDonnell one of the most successful employee-owned engineering firms in the country, and now his scholarship will help future engineers succeed.” For more information read the complete UMKC Press Release.

Dr. Baek-Young Choi featured in International Innovation

SCE Assistant Professor of Computer Science, Dr. Baek-Young Choi, and her research are featured in the December 2009 International Innovation Journal.

The article, Algorithms are the answer, explores how the Internet age has transformed global communication, and the increased demand for accessing online high-bandwidth multimedia such as video suggests that the sector is set for further exponential growth.
