Schoolwide Positive Behavior Supports

“PBIS has helped us understand that desired behaviors must be taught alongside other content. Our teachers now have the skills to develop solution-based plans that address the true needs of the students. We spend less time reacting and more time being proactive towards the needs of our students.”

Schoolwide Positive Behavior Supports (SW-PBS), a systematic approach to teaching students social and behavioral competencies, is a framework for creating a safe and orderly learning environment where all students can be academically and socially successful. SW-PBS assists schools and districts in building systems for implementing a multitiered approach to social emotional learning and improving outcomes for all students.

SW-PBS is based on these principles

  • Students are taught behavioral expectations
  • Students are acknowledged as they learn new social skills
  • Data is used to create targeted interventions for students who may need additional support
  • Effective schoolwide discipline is built upon the philosophy of teaching expected behaviors rather than punishment
