Spotlight: Stop Human Trafficking

The UMKC Ambassadors for Stopping Human Trafficking (ASHT) is a grassroots organization with the purpose of combating Human Trafficking.  We work closely with The Stop Trafficking Project, a local effort in Kansas City who has efforts in Thailand, India, and right here in the United States.  Through fundraising efforts and outreach events, The Stop Trafficking Project and the UMKC Ambassadors work for efforts in restoration, prevention, education, and awareness for Trafficking victims.

Recently, the “Only 12” campaign was started by The Stop Trafficking Project to raise awareness to the sad truth that the average age a girl is forced to be raped for profit is only 12.   Human Trafficking has become a $32 billion industry, and as UMKC students we want to make a difference.

To raise awareness of the the “Only 12” Campaign, the UMKC Ambassadors hosted a 1.2 Mile Walk for only $12 per person, raising nearly $450 for The Stop Trafficking Project and their efforts.  In January, some of the Ambassadors attended an event in Shawnee, KS, to donate hygiene items and purses to victims of Human Trafficking.  We are hosting another 1.2 Mile Walk this Spring and hope to double participation from last time.

Does this sound like a group you’d like to be a part of?  Only you can make a difference and we feel ignorance is no excuse.   Open your eyes to Human Trafficking, which is considered today as “modern day slavery.”

Our group meets once each month, usually the third Thursday of every month, and our next meeting is THIS Thursday, February 21st, in the Student Union Room 402 at 7:00 p.m.
