From Chancellor Leo E. Morton: Veterans Day

By , November 11, 2014 10:44 am

Chancellor MortonVeterans Day has long been an occasion for reflection on the contributions and achievements of the men and women who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces. In 1919, President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed Armistice Day to commemorate the end of World War I. In 1954, President Dwight D. Eisenhower and Congress changed the name of the holiday to Veterans Day to recognize all those who have served this country.

Today we celebrate the brave women and men who have served, or are currently serving, in the United States Armed Forces. We are grateful for the sacrifices, commitment and dedication all veterans and their families have made to protect our country.

Answering our country’s call is service of the highest order, and we commend and honor our Veterans for their service. Today at UMKC, about 400 student-veterans have identified themselves, and I would like to personally thank each of you for your service.

In an effort to keep you up to date on UMKC veteran-related information, services and events, I would like to announce that the university has created a Student Veteran Resource email newsletter. The first edition will be distributed today at 11 a.m.

Let us always remember and salute our courageous Veterans and all who are currently serving in all branches of the service. We cannot say thank you enough!

Faculty, staff and students, please join me in honoring all the servicemen and women, both veterans and those on active duty, who are part of the University of Missouri-Kansas City family.
