Be The Match Donor Drive – Oct. 26

By , October 18, 2011 8:37 am

A Donor Drive for the Be The Match Registry® will be held Wednesday, October 26 from 9:00am- 2:00pm in the Multipurpose Room of the Student Union.  The national Registry hopes to match every patient in need with a marrow or stem cell donor.  UMKC has already had two people on the registry be a match!

Joining the Be The Match Registry® is easy.   Patients need donors who are between the ages of 18 and 60, meet the health guidelines and are willing to donate to any patient in need.  In particular, the registry is looking for minority or donors of multiple ethnicities.

When you come to a donor registry drive, we will explain what it means to join the registry, help you understand your commitment, answer your questions and help you through the process.

All you need to do is:

  • Complete a registration form with contact information, health information and a signed agreement to join the Be The Match Registry. To help you complete the form, bring along:
    • Personal identification (such as a driver’s license or passport)
    • Contact information for two family members or friends who would know how to reach you in the future if your contact information changes.
  • Give a swab of cheek cells  to be tissue-typed. The Registry will use the results to match you to patients.
  • Joining the Registry is free; however, please consider making a donation:  we will be selling FoodieKC cards at the drive for $20 ($10 coupons for 52 restaurants) to raise funds to help offset the $100 cost to process the cheek swabs. Visit the FoodieKC website for more information.
