7 Tips for the Year Ahead

Get involved. Find your tribe. Get to know your professors. Here’s the community’s best advice for new students.

As we welcome all our new and returning students to campus, we wanted to share some advice for the year ahead. We gathered these words of wisdom from students and alumni who have been in your shoes before.

1. Be proactive.

Join clubs and participate. I did it later in my college years, but I wish I had done it sooner. All the relationships and people you meet and connect with—that’s so important.

2. Take advantage of the resources around you.

There are a lot of very devoted, committed individuals on this campus who are ready and willing to help you with whatever problems may be going on. Seek out every resource. Take advantage of every opportunity.

Dylan Burd B.A. Secondary Education ’14, M.A. Higher Education Administration ’16

3. Explore Kansas City.

It’s not the typical feeling you get from a college experience. You’re in the middle of the city, not just on campus.

Alex Dapp B.A. Communications Studies ’15

4. Make friends with your professors.

In college, we can be friendly and informal—they aren’t scary. They are real people like us.

Javiera Castro, double major in Biology and Psychology

5. Enjoy the small moments with your peers.

That’s what you look back on and treasure.

George White Jr. B.S. Civil Engineering ’13

6. Make connections.

Don’t be afraid to put yourself out there and find your tribe …. The amount of opportunities that come when you’re involved and you make connections are endless. You can spend four years in your dorm room or you can spend four years succeeding and making a name for yourself.

C.J. Pulluaim B.A. History ’17

7. Don’t be afraid to talk to other students.

It’s OK to make mistakes when you’re meeting new people and still getting used to the language (as an international student). Be active and go to activities with friends and classmates. Also, get a driver’s license. You’ll need one in Kansas City.

Get Ready for a New Semester

By , August 15, 2017 2:33 pm

Ready for the start of a new semester?

As we prepare for the start of a new school year, here are some things to check off your list:

  • Parking Permits.  Remember, permits can only be purchased on-line and will be mailed to you. at the end of the application process, a temp tag is available to print—simply place this on your dash until you receive the hang-tag in the mail.  Again—you will not be able to purchase permits in person.  For more information, see Parking Operations.
  • Books and Supplies.  You can print your book list, compare prices, and purchase your books all on the UMKC Bookstores website.  Select in-store pick-up to save on shipping costs.  The UMKC Bookstores also have computers, computer accessories, and any supplies you might need.
  • Solar Eclipse.  UMKC will be open on the first day of classes, which also happens to be the date of a once-in-a-lifetime event, the solar eclipse!  Be sure to step outside (with proper safety glasses!) to take a peek as this phenom passes us by.  We’re not in the path of totality, but it’ll be a close one!  For more information, check out this website.
  • Welcome Week!  For great ideas on fun activities to meet your fellow students, check out the events hosted during Welcome Week and more during the first 40 days of the semester.

Wishing everyone a successful and productive Fall semester!
