election-debate-watch-partyThe UMKC Department of Political Science and the Associated Students of the University of Missouri at UMKC will host a second presidential debate watch party and voter registration drive of the series, ElectFest ‘16, from 7 to 10 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 9 at Pizza 51, 5060 Oak Street, Kansas City, Mo.

This event is free and open to the public. Those who attend will enjoy free pizza, courtesy of the UMKC Office of Multicultural Student Affairs, and the UMKC Latina/Latino Studies Program, two of 10 ElectFest ‘16 partners. Free parking will be available on levels five and six of the Cherry Street Parking Garage, 5000 Cherry St., Kansas City, Mo.

As part of ElectFest ’16, UMKC volunteers participated in National Voter Registration Day on Sept. 27. They registered new voters and answered questions such as the process for absentee voting. Students also shared their reasons for voting in this year’s election:

“I vote because my vote matters.” – Wayne

“I vote because people say the younger generation chooses not to, and I want to change that.” –Emmanuel

“I vote for my children’s future.” – Christine

The goal of ElectFest ‘16 is to register new voters and engage the UMKC and Kansas City communities in the political process. ElectFest ’16 organizers also invite people to share why they vote on social media and use the hashtag #UMKCVotes. Approximately 250 people attended the first watch party and drive on Sept. 26. They enjoyed free pizza courtesy of the UMKC Women’s Center and the Women’s and Gender Studies Program. For a complete event schedule, visit ElectFest ’16 online.
