UMKC Libraries provide free workshops geared to students seeking help using library services and resources. Workshops are single, 60 minute sessions, typically comprised of 5-10 students. Preregistration is required.

Workshops are open to all UMKC students and include:

Library Basics – Did you know you can reserve a room for group study?  Text or chat with a librarian?  Do research and read articles and books from your dorm or apartment in your fuzzy slippers at 3:00 AM?  Come learn about these services and more, and take a short library tour!

Library Research – Is your paper due?  Learn how to select and narrow your topic, develop a search strategy, and save time by using the library efficiently and effectively!

Managing and Formatting Citations – Two separate workshops, for Zotero or EndNote Web users, teach you how to begin using these tools.  Import, organize, and manage references.  Create a bibliography, change style formats, and learn how to incorporate citations into your paper!

Microsoft Office – Ask Gloria – Gloria provides individualized, one-on-one instruction helping you to use MS Office programs effectively.  Workshops include:

  • MS Word
  • MS PowerPoint
  • MS Excel

Workshops especially for graduate students include:

How to Write a Literature Review – You may never have written a literature review.  This session gets you ready to succeed!

How to Do a Poster Presentation – Learn the elements of effective presentation and be ready for your first conference poster session!

Using WorldCat to Expand Your Research – Find resources beyond UMKC Libraries using this important research tool, and learn how to access them!

Conducting Interdisciplinary Research – Literature searching across multiple fields can be daunting. Let us help you get started!

Multiple sessions of each workshop will be offered throughout the term.  For workshop dates, locations, and to preregister visit the Research Workshops page.  For more information, contact UMKC Librarian Gloria Tibbs or 816-235-1540.

Microsoft upgrade to student e-mail system starts September 12

e-mailThe New Face of Student Email

Microsoft will be upgrading the university’s student e-mail system to Microsoft Office 365 for Education.  After the upgrade students can take advantage of a 25GB mailbox while continuing to receive all official University-related communications in one convenient mailbox.

The upgrade will begin on September 12 and continue until all student email accounts are upgraded. During this time, you may experience a brief outage (60 seconds to 60 minutes).  All mail will be delivered, even if you temporarily cannot log into your account.

What does this mean to you?

After the upgrade you will have two separate accounts with the same user name and password.  A description of these two accounts is listed below:

  1. Office 365 account (formerly Live@edu account). This is your University email account and where you will find your UMKC email.  It is administered by UMKC and the IS Call Center (235-2000) can assist you with login issues, reset your password and offer ongoing support.
  2. Personal Microsoft account. Your SkyDrive content and other Microsoft services are now contained in a personal account. UMKC no longer administers this secondary account and, as a result, cannot reset the password for you.

Do you need to do anything?

A couple steps now may save you some time during the upgrade process.

  1. Make sure your software is up-to-date. Upgrade your Internet Explorer if you are using IE 6 or 7. If you use Outlook to read your email, make sure you are running Outlook 2007 or Outlook 2010.
  2. Make it easy to recover your password. Add an alternate email address to your Live@edu account before the upgrade if you have not already done so. This will make it easy for you to reset or recover your personal Microsoft account password during or after the upgrade. For information on how to add an alternate email address to your current account, visit www.umkc.edu/is/webmail/live/OLaltaddress.asp.

Now what?

Continue to log into your email through www.umkc.edu/exchange to view and send email. Your email address is the same (username@mail.umkc.edu) and your username (SSO) and password remain unchanged. Mail will continue to be delivered even if you do experience a brief outage.

For more information see the Office 365 transition FAQ website at www.umkc.edu/is/webmail/live/upgradefaq.asp.  If you have questions or need help contact the UMKC IS Call Center at (816)235-2000 or visit the IS Call Center at 4825 Troost, Room 102.
