Spotlight: Stop Human Trafficking

By , February 19, 2013 8:16 am

The UMKC Ambassadors for Stopping Human Trafficking (ASHT) is a grassroots organization with the purpose of combating Human Trafficking.  We work closely with The Stop Trafficking Project, a local effort in Kansas City who has efforts in Thailand, India, and right here in the United States.  Through fundraising efforts and outreach events, The Stop Trafficking Project and the UMKC Ambassadors work for efforts in restoration, prevention, education, and awareness for Trafficking victims.

Recently, the “Only 12” campaign was started by The Stop Trafficking Project to raise awareness to the sad truth that the average age a girl is forced to be raped for profit is only 12.   Human Trafficking has become a $32 billion industry, and as UMKC students we want to make a difference.

To raise awareness of the the “Only 12” Campaign, the UMKC Ambassadors hosted a 1.2 Mile Walk for only $12 per person, raising nearly $450 for The Stop Trafficking Project and their efforts.  In January, some of the Ambassadors attended an event in Shawnee, KS, to donate hygiene items and purses to victims of Human Trafficking.  We are hosting another 1.2 Mile Walk this Spring and hope to double participation from last time.

Does this sound like a group you’d like to be a part of?  Only you can make a difference and we feel ignorance is no excuse.   Open your eyes to Human Trafficking, which is considered today as “modern day slavery.”

Our group meets once each month, usually the third Thursday of every month, and our next meeting is THIS Thursday, February 21st, in the Student Union Room 402 at 7:00 p.m.

UMKC Makes Princeton Review Top 75 ‘Best Value’ List for Second Consecutive Year

By , February 19, 2013 8:15 am

UMKC is listed as one of the Top 75 public universities in the U.S. by The Princeton Review for the second consecutive year. UMKC has been named for “delivering an amazing college experience that’s worth every penny.”

The Massachusetts-based education services company profiles UMKC in its just-published book, “The Best Value Colleges: 2013 Edition” and on a special area on its website.

Two other Missouri public universities made the top-75 list: Missouri University of Science and Technology in Rolla, and Truman State University in Kirksville.  No universities in Kansas made the list this year.

The Princeton Review praise UMKC for its “outstanding business programs,” and “fast-track medical program.”

You don’t have to go it alone–UMKC Counseling Center

By , February 18, 2013 4:51 pm

College is a wonderful time of growth, fun, self-exploration, and transition.  You’ll be exposed to new ideas, people, and experiences…all of which makes for a rich adventure of learning and self-development.  Sure, it’s a fun time, but let’s face it – it can also be stressful.  It probably won’t shock you to know that UMKC students report STRESS as the top impediment to their academic success – and stress, in turn, is related to a number of mental health concerns that are commonly faced by college students, including depression, anxiety, loss of sleep, and more.

Fortunately, if you find yourself experiencing these or other mental health concerns or needing a confidential place to sort out some things, you don’t have to go it alone.  UMKC has a Counseling Center to assist you.

All students are eligible for an intake session plus eight (8) additional counseling sessions each academic year at no charge.  We are here to help with a wide range of concerns – everything from difficulty adjusting to life in college to severe depression…and everything in between.  Students come to the Counseling Center to work on their relationships, improve their mood, reduce anxiety, overcome eating disorders, and more.  It’s not uncommon for one of our counselors to meet with a homesick student, a student with depression, a student with trouble in their romantic relationship, and a student wanting to improve study skills – all in one day!  We are truly equipped to meet the psychological needs of our diverse student body.

We encourage you to visit our website to learn more about the benefits of counseling and what to expect.  There, you can take a free screening for several mental health issues.  Or, simply call the Counseling Center at (816) 235-1635 and ask for an intake appointment.  We will meet with you, explore your concerns with you, and together make a plan for how to make the changes you are looking for in your life.
